How to Replace an audi spare key cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car key replacement audi will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or an unfire when in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is that they are very cheap and readily available particularly in the case of the Bosch unit like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the audi replacement key's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test for Audi tt replacement key sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points. This part is common across the audi key shell 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
