How to Replace an audi keyless entry G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes however the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). The signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. 5. Tachometer
