FIAT.pngHow to Replace an audi advanced key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the audi spare keys in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor Audi key Shell are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easily accessible, especially in the case of an Bosch sensor, which is what we have. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous problems in your vehicle. It's a vital component of your audi key replacement cost uk's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. There should be the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these two points. This part is common across the replacement Audi A4 Key 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
