How to Replace an audi etron key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, but i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or audi key fob Replacement from a parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. The good thing is that they are very cheap and readily available, especially when you're looking at the Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of the replacement audi key cost's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is a typical part that is found across the audi a1 key fob 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
